During your dry eye assessment, we will carry out a detailed assessment of Dry Eye, involving some of, if not more than, the following steps:
- Health and medication history
- Symptoms/Past Dry Eye treatments
- Tear quantity/quality assessments
- Microscope examination of the front of the eye
- Microscope examination of eye lids.
In practice we have a Topcon MYAH instrument which includes a comprehensive suite of dry eye assessment tools to help support patient education and treatment recommendations. Tear film quality can be non-invasively assessed through measuring the speed of tear evaporation (called tear break-up time or TBT) as well as measuring the tear volume along the bottom lid (called tear meniscus height or TMH). Infrared technology also allows the MYAH to image the oil glands along the top and bottom lids called Meibomian glands. The percentage of gland loss can then be calculated for a selected area.
The results of these assessments can be visualized in a report summarizing the tear quality and gland loss as seen below.
At end of the of the Dry Eye Assessment we will discuss our findings and suggest a treatment plan with you. We will instruct you fully on how to obtain the best benefit on use of treatments you can do at home and arrange a follow-up visit to check on improvement.
